Behind the Checkout

Waking Life

December 17, 2006 · 5 Comments

I just returned from Boyfriend’s house.

Tonight I was plagued by dreams (or hallucinations, since I felt only half-asleep) of being at my post at work. I had a constant stream of customers and their groceries were all jumbled up on the conveyor belt. For some reason, perhaps because I was staring out through a sleep-induced haze, I couldn’t properly make out all the items the customers had laid out for me. As a result, I became confused by how I should organize their groceries and what items I should put together in a plastic bag.

I stood there, under the pressure to act quickly, desperately trying to take in all the items that they had. Failing, I finally gave up and fell back from the counter as a sign of surrender.

Then I reasoned with myself that it shouldn’t matter anyway that I wasn’t attending to them because wasn’t it 3a.m. and what customer in their right mind would be shopping at 3a.m., and wasn’t this all just a dream because the shops aren’t open at 3a.m.

It was at this point, in each of my checkout dreams, that I woke up. Oddly, though I was aware that it had been a dream, I was nevertheless unnerved by the fact that I hadn’t finished the transaction with the customer.

you should watch more TV before sleeping, maybe you’ll dream something nice…unless you really like work, of course.

=) Wow, I wasn’t expecting any comments yet! Firstly, I only wrote this entry about six hours ago and secondly, I had planned to write a couple more entries and backdate them to a period before this entry.

To answer your question, I’m still trying to figure out whether I like or dislike work. I think I’m keeping my attitudes or dispositions out of it, and am just seeing it as fodder for writing.

Thanks for the suggestion – has what you proposed worked for you? Has TV creeped into your dreams in a pleasant way?

I like reading posts I guess :) TV does reportedly creep into dreams. I’ve not had that happen myself yet, though. But I have with music :)

As in, you hear particular songs in your dreams?

I’ve had TV characters in my dreams before, but I don’t believe I’ve ever heard music in my sleep.

Btw, I’m new to all of this and I haven’t quite gotten the hang of a few things. Could you tell me if my comments are showing up as being direct replies to yours, and part of a thread, or are they their own separate entities? =)

i’m new to this too, but I see them as part of a thread yes:) Don’t be scared to pop by my blog and sniff around! Music in dreams is lovely.
